Australia is host to more than 50 invasive animal species, resulting in millions of feral animals roaming the country, providing a free ride for infectious diseases to spread and pose a threat to wildlife, livestock and humans.

Invasive Animals CRC Detection & Prevention coordinator and project leader, Dr Wendy Henderson, is helping to understand these potential risks and develop strategies to reduce the impact of invasive animals. She has just authored a review of disease agents found in feral animals in Australia, a hot topic which will be explored at the first international Global Biosecurity 2010 Conference in Brisbane. READ MORE

Registrations for the conference are now open. Biosecurity is everyone's business," said Mr Rob Delane, Deputy Secretary for the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

"The convening of a major international conference in Australia with a focus on agricultural and environmental biosecurity is recognition of the global standing of Australia's institutions in this area, and the important role that Australia can, and should, play in biosecurity science," he said.

‘Science-based risk management is a key platform of an effective biosecurity system which needs to operate effectively across the pre-border, border and post-border continuum'.

Mr Delane said Global Biosecurity 2010 provides an outstanding opportunity for representatives from biosecurity agencies, research organisations, agricultural industries, environmental organisations and other relevant stakeholder groups to keep up-to-date on world's best practice.

"Tapping into the collective expertise of those attending the Global Biosecurity 2010 conference will help enhance the ability of Australia and all participating nations to effectively manage biosecurity roles along the continuum, protect and improve their pest status and facilitate trade, travel and community development," he said.

Conference organisers are now calling for papers for presentation at the event through the conference website http://www.globalbiosecurity2010.com/ Opportunities for sponsoring, exhibiting or attending the conference are also available.

Global Biosecurity 2010: safeguarding agriculture and the environment is a collaborative partnership between Australian Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre for Emerging Infectious Disease, Cooperative Research Centre for National Plant Biosecurity and Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre.

ends
conference global home page media release Public Mon, 01 Jun 2009 23:01:06 +0000 K.Scott 971 at http://legacy.crcplantbiosecurity.com.au Pathfinders: The Innovators Conference http://legacy.crcplantbiosecurity.com.au/pathfinders

Investing in science and innovation is crucial for Australia to stay competitive in an increasingly knowledge-based global economy. Its aim is to provide a forum for biosecurity researchers and stakeholders to:

workshop, network and exchange knowledge on agricultural and environmental biosecurity

facilitate engagement and cross-fertilisation of ideas between researchers and their end-users (industry, regulators and other end-users), and

build cross-disciplinary networks across all biosecurity related disciplines.

Planning for the conference is underway and the program will be developed in the new year including a call for abstracts.

Global Biosecurity 2010 will be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from 28 February 2010 - 3 March 2010.

For further information email biosecurity@con-sol.com

Back to The Leaflet
biosecurity conference Public Thu, 18 Dec 2008 02:27:00 +0000 K.Scott 890 at http://legacy.crcplantbiosecurity.com.au
