Investigating plant pests just got fun with our school education program.

Our school education program was established in response to reports that indicate decreasing student enrolments in science courses, and the increasing perception in school-aged students that science is ‘too hard’ or ‘boring’ and ‘not relevant’. One aim of the school education program was to raise awareness of plant biosecurity issues and their importance to Australian society and the environment in students of all ages. In producing materials to support teachers and students in learning about plant biosecurity, we also aim to develop students’ scientific skills and knowledge.

This year, we have developed and trialled a primary science unit, Plant Pest Investigators. This unit has been designed for upper primary school students (years 4- 7) and presents traditional 'Life and Living’ content within the context of plant biosecurity. Students investigate mould, ants, fruit flies, mealworms and snails to gain an understanding of what a pest is and why it is important to protect our crops from pests and diseases.

The schools trialling the unit have been located in metropolitan and regional areas throughout Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland and Canberra. They have provided us with some great feedback about the unit and how the students enjoyed investigating plant pests.

The unit has been printed and will be available to schools and interested people in hard copy ($20 + $5 postage and handling) or electronically (no cost). If you are interested in receiving a copy of the resource, please contact our Education Officer on 02 6201 2882 or schools@crcplantbiosecurity.com.au

primary school unit Wed, 28 Oct 2009 04:53:09 +0000 VANMEURSA 1205 at http://legacy.crcplantbiosecurity.com.au Plant biosecurity for pre-primary/primary schools http://legacy.crcplantbiosecurity.com.au/content/plant-biosecurity-primary-schools
Plant Pest Investigation with Lily and Sam

To raise awareness of plant biosecurity issues and encourage our youngest students (5-8 years old) to enjoy learning about plants and the importance of protecting them from pests and diseases, we have produced a big book, Plant Pest Investigation. Plant Pest Investigation comes with teachers' notes supporting activities for the classroom.

Follow Lily and Sam on a scientific investigation to find the reason behind Sam's sick plant. Helped by Dr Wheaten, their investigation takes them through memories of their overseas holiday, a trip to their grandparents' farm and a visit to real science laboratory.

During their investigation, Lily and Sam learn about the importance of protecting Australia's crops from pests and diseases.

The big book is an educational tool and was launched on Thursday 6 November 2008 by Dr Jim Peacock, Australia's former Chief Scientist.

To order a copy of Plant Pest Investigation for your family or classroom, download and complete an order form.

Return to School education program page

biosecurity free school resources pests plants primary science teaching Public Tue, 20 Oct 2009 22:45:54 +0000 HAYM 1191 at http://legacy.crcplantbiosecurity.com.au School education program http://legacy.crcplantbiosecurity.com.au/education-and-training/school-education-program
Investigating plant pests just got fun!

As part of our school education strategy, we are focusing on educating the next generation of scientists and science users. By portraying plant biosecurity and science in a positive and exciting manner to students from a young age, it is hoped that more students will be encouraged to pursue science as a career and, in the long-term, fill some of the science, engineering and technology skills gaps.

Plant biosecurity for pre-primary/primary schools

Plant Pest Investigation with Lily and Sam

Plant Pest Investigators

Plant biosecurity for secondary schools

Plant Pest Investigations

Professional development for teachers

biosecurity free school resources pests plants primary science teaching Public Mon, 21 Jul 2008 04:32:51 +0000 K.Scott 165 at http://legacy.crcplantbiosecurity.com.au
