Our re-bid

The CRCNPB has a lifespan of seven years, with a finishing date of 30 June 2012. Through the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research's (DIISR) CRC Program, we are eligible to rebid for another term of up to eight years.

The Board and Participants of the CRC for National Plant Biosecurity agreed to support the development of a rebid proposal based on a plant biosecurity cooperative research centre. This rebid was submitted to DIISR's CRC Program before 1 July 2011.

On 22 November 2011 the Plant Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre (PBCRC) received the positive news that the rebid was successful. PBCRC received 93% of the funding sought, for six years starting from 1 July 2012.

The PBCRC will have four research programs, Early Warning, Effective Detection and Response, Safeguarding Trade and Secure Future. More information is available in the excerpt from the rebid submission.

The Board have established a Participants Taskforce which consists or representatives from the grains industry, national agencies, state agencies, regulatory agencies, higher education sectors and the CRCNPB. In addition, we have a Program Taskforce which is responsible for developing the framework for the science program and projects, as well as a Core Team which is responsible for the overall project management and delivery of the re-bid.

Plant Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre

In the proposed ‘Plant Biosecurity CRC’, we will work closely with industry, regulators and the community throughout the project life cycle to ensure research outcomes address stakeholder requirements and expectations. Projects will also deliver into Australia’s national biosecurity strategy, and address the national research priority of protecting Australia from invasive pests and diseases.

As part of this new CRC, we will work collaboratively to provide Australia’s plant industries with tools for better surveillance and diagnostics; a systems approach to securing product integrity, and enhanced biosecurity preparedness through effective risk mitigation strategies. The new CRC will also conduct research to help improve current practices of plant biosecurity awareness, community/industry engagement and knowledge transfer, as well as providing education and training to enhance current and future capability.

The new projected CRC will bring together Australia’s leading biosecurity researchers and educators from the traditional plant science disciplines such as entomology and pathology, as well as social scientists, economists, engineers, statisticians and mathematicians.

As biosecurity risks continue to escalate across the globe, collaboration and engagement with international agencies and institutions will also play a pivotal role in this CRC.

Australian plant production systems, markets and environment are protected from invasive pests and diseases through an effective plant biosecurity system.

Amazing World of Science Competition Winners

The Cooperative Research Centre for National Plant Biosecurity hosted an exhibition booth at the Australian Science Festival's 'Amazing World of Science' from Wednesday 27 - Saturday 30 May. This was also held simultaneously as the annual Cooperative Research Centre Association conference.

Over the four days, over 10,000 people passed through the exhibition. As the CRCNPB has a strong focus on education and training, we had two biosecurity quizzes using our model village ‘Biosecureville' as the prompt for answers. The first quiz was targeted for school children with a number of questions around plant biosecurity, and students could win prizes such as a Bug Barn or Mp3 players. The second quiz was targeted for teachers and adults who were able to win a copy of the CRC's big book, Plant Pest Investigation.

Daily prizes were drawn and the winners have been notified by email and phone. Prizes will be sent on Wednesday 3 June.
